OCMPAC – MPA Collaborative Network Updates

Please see below for a special message from our partners at the California Marine Sanctuary Foundation (CMSF), who are putting together an expert working group of estuarine ecologists in California to help identify successful and appropriate spatial management measures that will contribute to reaching 30 X 30 goals.

In 2020, Governor Newsom issued Executive Order N-82-20, which established the goal of conserving 30% of California’s lands and coastal waters by 2030 – known as 30×30. In 2023, this was codified into law through SB 337. For the purpose of 30×30, an area is “conserved” if it meets the following definition: “Land and coastal water areas that are durably protected and managed to sustain functional ecosystems, both intact and restored, and the diversity of life that they support.” (Pathways to 30×30, 2022).

We [at CMSF] are coordinating an expert working group of estuarine ecologists in California to help identify successful and appropriate spatial management measures that will contribute to reaching our 30 X 30 goals. At this time, we [at CMSF] are identifying California estuarine scientific experts to contribute to an evaluation of the spatial management measures that are being applied to California coastal estuaries, and to evaluate which ones of these measures can help contribute to our State’s 30 X 30 goals.

We [at CMSF] are soliciting recommendations for invitation to the 30 X 30 scientific expert estuarine ecology working group.  This working group will be meet several times virtually between now and September to identify priority criteria for identifying successful spatial management measures.

Please share your expert recommendations with us [ at CMSF], and if interested please contact rikki@californiamsf.org
