NOAA’s Office of National Marine Sanctuaries just published a final management plan for Channel Islands National Marine Sanctuary (CINMS) and an accompanying final environmental assessment. The new plan, which will guide the course of sanctuary management over the coming decade, was shaped through significant public input.

The final management plan, which replaces the previous 2009 plan, places new emphasis on understanding and addressing the effects of climate change, enhancing stakeholder and tribal engagement, and reducing impacts from marine debris and non-native species. The plan also includes continued protection of the sanctuary through enforcement of existing regulations, education and outreach strategies that promote ocean stewardship, and inclusive community engagement. Through this action, no changes were made to CINMS regulations or boundaries.

Additional information about the management plan revision process can be found on the project website.
