On 24 June 2022, 25 U.S. military veterans received a very successful all-day sportfishing charter aboard the vessel “Stardust” out of Santa Barbara Landing. The Santa Barbara Elks Lodge #613 Veterans Committee funded all expenses for the veterans including: licenses, rods, tackle, meals and drinks on board, and fish cleaning by the crew. In collaboration, the Santa Barbara Chapter of the Coastal Conservation Association of California (CCA CAL SB) handled the planning, logistics, and video recording of the event, and its sportfishing sponsors, Okuma, and AFTCO, gifted new insulated, waterproof, hooded fishing coats and billed caps to every veteran. Prior to the charter, word had spread throughout the veteran community, from San Diego to Atascadero, CA, that this was the “charter of the year” to take, and the lucky veterans who went were not disappointed. The following heart-felt complement from one Vietnam veteran for the CCA videographer and “Fun Director,” Yvonne Pedersen captured the spirit of all:
“Your exuberance and caring were infectious, so, between your efforts, the Skipper finding the fish, and the deck crew helping everyone have a great time, this was the most memorable fishing trip I have ever experienced.”
Uncommon comradery was common on this charter! Veterans and CCA CAL members who were experienced anglers constantly mentored novices, and shared hunting techniques for all types of fish caught. Every veteran caught several very nice-sized and tasty fish, which included Lingcod, Ocean Whitefish, and several varieties of Rockfish. This was an event which actually changed men’s lives, and its success will certainly ensure the participation and appreciation of California veterans for future collaborative events by the Elks and CCA CAL.
