AB 2787 LEAD BAN
The California State Legislature is considering Assembly Bill 2787 that will BAN all lead weights and sinkers 50 grams (1.75 ounces) or less. This be will have a devastating impact on fishing participation rates, outdoor tourism, sales and jobs.
We could really use your help with generating as many letters as possible from manufacturers, retailers, charter boat companies, fishing clubs, etc.
We were notified today that AB 2787 has been referred to a committee chaired by the bill’s author and could be heard in the coming weeks. We need your help!
Please send letters to:
Assembly Environmental Safety & Toxic Materials Committee
Assembly Member Bill Quirk, Chair
and Members of the Committee

Suggested Talking Points for letters: (Personalize your letter and share a unique perspective)
- There is no evidence that lead fishing weights threaten wildlife populations in California, specifically. Isolated incidences in California do not suggest a significant risk, or the justification for a statewide ban.
• While lead bans exist in some Northeastern states or other countries, some wildlife found in other states are uncommon here. Moreover, if they exist here, they could limited to a small geographical area that would not justify a “statewide” ban.
• Will harm fishing participation rates by driving up the cost of fishing tackle two-three times, or more.
• Undermines intent of bill. As fishing license sales decline, there will be less revenue for state conservation and habitat programs that protect wildlife and keep our waters clean. (Annual licenses sales have declined 55% since 1980)
• Will harm outdoor tourism and jobs dependent on recreational fishing for economic activity (CA: $4.6 billion a year)
• Since California is one of the country’s largest consumer markets for fishing tackle and outdoor equipment, the bill could put many American tackle manufacturers and mom-and-pop tackle shops out of business.
Please encourage fellow anglers to join the “Stop the Fishing Tackle Ban” by signing our petitions at the Fred Hall Shows.
