Are you interested in getting involved in one of California’s premier ocean conservation programs? Do you have a couple of days each week of free time? Then this announcement might be just what you are looking for! Hubbs-Sea World Research Institute in partnership with the Coastal Conservation Association California (CCA Cal) is seeking a highly dynamic and motivated individual willing to volunteer his or her time to support California’s only marine fish replenishment program as a Volunteer Hatchery Liaison. For nearly three decades, this replenishment program has already had an incredible network of dedicated volunteers supporting the growout of seabass to a larger size at various satellite locations throughout southern California. The Hatchery Liaison position will build on the success of the existing volunteer model by recruiting and integrating volunteers at the Hatchery in Carlsbad where the juvenile seabass are spawned and raised. As practical, additional hatchery volunteer coordination may be extended to include HSWRI’s main laboratory in San Diego, where California halibut are being reared for replenishment.
We are looking for a Hatchery Liaison who is willing to spend a minimum of two days per week actively engaged in the hatchery program and interacting directly with HSWRI staff to fully understand processes, scheduling, and priorities. Through this high level of engagement, the Hatchery Liaison will then recruit and coordinate other volunteers for specific tasks related to the Program on an as-needed basis. These volunteer-supported areas are planned to include the following:
1. Docents who can lead tours of the hatchery and help inform and educate the public
2. Fish caretakers who help to feed fish, clean tanks, move and count fish, tag fish, etc.
3. Broodstock collectors who help rotate new breeders into the Program
4. Handymen and women who help with small housekeeping projects like painting, light woodworking, plumbing, fabrication, etc.
In addition to being able to commit the time to this position, the individual we are seeking must be a good communicator and a team player who is confident in his or her ability to recruit volunteer help from others. If you are interested in applying, please contact HSWRI at hr@hswri.org
